Data Scientist
Data scientists are researchers who are adept at creating systems which learn from data, with backgrounds in subjects such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, computer science, and statistics. Data scientists at Living Discoveries drive the computational half of the medical research we perform, collaborating very closely with and learning from our medical scientists. As such, they have a huge impact in the design and accuracy of our products, which directly translates into lives saved. Data scientists report to the Chief Technical Officer (who was once one himself). Ideal candidates for this role have strong mathematical, computational, or statistical backgrounds in subjects such as machine learning and computer vision, and have the ability to prototype their ideas and research in high-level statistical languages such as Matlab or R.
What we offer:
- A data mining challenge with meaning, purpose, and respect: we think many of you will find this much more meaningful than ad optimization or financial modeling.
- A workplace which understands how research works and allows you to innovate at your own pace.
- An opportunity to get your name on a lot of publications.
- The independence to truly innovate. Most data science time here is spent improving products, not creating reports.
- Substantial bonuses and respect for exceptional work.
- Equity in the company.
- A challenging, creative, casual, and fun workplace environment.
- Regular team dinners and outings.
- Very flexible hours and telecommuting: work anytime, as long as the job gets done.
- Open to part-time and per diem employment for many positions.
- A chance to directly collaborate with and learn from people who are accomplished in a wide range of fields.
- Cash and stock bonuses - and an open ear - for your ideas.
- The opportunity to have a significant impact on the company and on the future of medicine.
- The knowledge that you are directly saving lives every day.
Responsibilities:
- Perform computational research in close collaboration with the medical team.
- Prototype product improvements and aid developers in integrating these improvements into production systems.
- Propose new research directions and influence the product offerings of the company.
- Interpret statistical results of medical and computational research.
- Help plan research studies and clinical trials.
- Help us drive a fundamental paradigm shift in medical diagnostics. Teaching computers to interpret scans designed for human sight is only the beginning.
Qualifications:
- An MS or equivalent degree in mathematics, statistics, medicine, science, or engineering (Ph. D. a plus).
- 4+ years of experience in academic or professional research (medical research a plus).
- A thorough background in machine learning and computer vision, or willingness to learn.
- Intelligent: able to derive novel insights and spot hidden patterns in data.
- Bold and creative: able and willing to formulate and verify new hypotheses with high risk and high reward while developing new products.
- Able to prototype statistical models and summarize them for implementation by developers (also being a developer yourself is a plus).
